Forest insects and diseases are natural parts of forest environments. But when there is an outbreak or an introduced problem, losses can be extensive and expensive. Changes in weather patterns, pest infestation and disease are the primary disturbance agents in western US forests. These outbreaks have an effect on goods and services associated with forest ecosystems including timber, water, fish and wildlife habitats.
These disturbances have also created a change in wildfire behavior and the intensity. Over the last 10 years we have lost an average of 8.5 million acres annually, to the point where our forests soils are not reproducing like they once used to.
We are an organization of people with the single mission of preserving our national forests. Our three areas of focus are:
Forests are home to more than just trees. To have healthy forest there also needs to be a healthy ecosystem, and nature can sometimes use our help. The primary areas of understanding that Forest Preservation Corps works on are:
We know forests are healthy when we see variety of young and old trees, many different tree species, shrubs, grasses and flowers. “When forests are rich in plant life, they also tend to be rich in birds, insects and land animals.”
Preserving this environment not only helps our planet to remain healthy, but it also provides a great environment for everyone to enjoy.
